This summer has ended a year and a half’s worth of hunting for the last of the missing puzzle pieces I have been looking for! I had been searching for any hard copy info on the MDA telethons from 1971 onward, and was fortunate to run into a former KMTV employee who had a wonderful collection of memorabilia from both the 1973 and 1974 telethons, as well as a nice stash of Creature Feature items including an early version of the “Spookarama” carnival kit! Oodles of MDA paperwork and KMTV documents will be shared, showing the inner workings of the telethon. There will also be a wealth of photos from these telethons as well. Very cool stuff!
I am now into the actual writing and page composition of the biography. Having been employed as an advertising designer for over 20 years (including a lot of magazine work), this is coming together quite nicely! I have finished a 10 page chapter on KMTV’s first horror host “Gregore”, as well as a few pages on the early history of the Jones family and their homesteading of the great American midwest in the late 1800s.
Will be next working on John’s childhood in Lyons, KS.
I am always open to inquiries from folks who think they would have something to add to this biography… photos, home movies, stories or TV footage, etc, etc! Just look for my phone and email on the CONTACTS page. Updated:04/18/2010
Hi kids. The book is still being worked on bit by bit. More photos surfaced last month, some awesome never before seen b/w shots of John from the Omaha World Herald’s “Day in the Life” article they did on him in the mid 1970s. Pics of him working at KMTV, driving around as San Guinary, an autograph event… fun stuff. Also just got some awesome color photos from our camera-guy Jeff Burton, where Doc showed up at a Humane Society event his mother worked at in the early 70s.
The big push right now is the first volume of the John Jones DVD, which will contain 1970s Creature Feature footage. This will be a fundraiser item at our Fishbowl this year, which is slated for Saturday, Sept. 3rd, with proceeds going to help fight against Muscular Dystrophy. The footage is all very nice quality… like being in your parent’s living room with the macrame owl and the string art of the Brooklyn Bridge. Each cut in will be titled with what information was tagged on it- director, date, etc. These will probably retail between $20-$25 ea.
If you have any photos or stories you would like to add to the book, please contact me below. Thanks!
